Getting From Point A To Point B In The Digital Age
In our global world, on a planet where anyone can go anywhere, whether it's on foot, in a car, train, boat or plane, and even soon in a space ship, it's no wonder that people took travel by storm. Every day there are thousands of planes taking off and landing in the US alone, many more worldwide. There are millions of cars on the road. But regardless what method people use, they all have one thing in common: they're going somewhere. So how do you know whether you're actually going to the right place? It may seem silly, but getting directions from one place to another has changed over the years, and there's more ways than ever to do it.
The simplest, and oldest way, is to simply ask someone. When you're on foot or on a bike, it's pretty easy. You just stop on the side of a road, and you ask someone. It's important to ask the right person however. The point here is to get a good answer, so you should ask people who look like they live in the area. If you ask other tourists, chances are they won't know. You can guess whether the person lives there by the way they walk, how they are dressed, and whether they look around a lot. If they wear a camera on their neck, chances are they aren't from around there.
But if you're in a car, you may not want to stop and ask for directions. That's why maps were made. Maps are great because they show you an overview of the whole area. There are maps covering a single town, or a state, or even the whole country. The bigger the area covered however, the less details it will have on that area. That's why you need to pick the right map. For example, if you intend to visit a couple of towns in a state, you should get a map of the state. But if your travel is only to one specific town, you can get a map of the city itself. Maps are usually inexpensive pieces of paper you can get at tourist offices. You can look for road signs that direct you to these offices when you enter town.
Of course, if you have a bit of money you can buy yourself the greatest device for giving you directions, which is the GPS system. GPS devices have evolved a lot over time, and now they can be bought for a few hundred dollars, and come with many features. The maps are built in and can be zoomed in and out. They provide real time routing functions, so you can ask the GPS device to tell you the road to your destination, and it will speak the turns and roads you must take as you take them. They also often include traffic reports, they can warn you of upcoming road work, and much more. These GPS devices can also be acquired as software inside a smartphone, so you don't even need to buy a new box.
Regardless what you decide to use however, it's important you pick the right option for you. This way, you'll arrive at your destination on time.
